My 3 year old German Shepherd is obsessed with going in cars. She runs to cars whenever she thinks your going anywhere. She even jumps through windows, and scratches them when going in. I don't know how to stop her and its driving me crazy. She has scratched my dads car while jumping through the window. I need to know how to stop her from going into cars before she ruins a strangers car at the dog park.
Can you help with my obsessive dog?
You need to condition her to ignore cars. Put her on a leash and open the car door. A martingale collar is a good collar to use. It gives a correction but releases. Walk past the car and give her a correction when she goes toward the car. Keep doing this until she ignores the car without a correction. You may need to do this for several days for 10-20 minutes at a time. Use a different car whenever you can and don't let her have any reaction to the car.
You should also get her in the car and then immediately get her out. This lets her know that you are in charge of the car and she only goes in when you say so. If you are on a walk and she reacts to a car, correct her.
Reply:Keep her on leash. When she tries to pull toward a car tell her no and make her sit and be calm. Pay no more attention to her until she stops trying to go near the car. Find a friend who will let you work with her before you go near a strangers car.
Reply:Yes, definitely keep her on the leash. If you want to walk her without the leash you will need to get professional help. I recommend getting a professional dog trainer, which can be quite expensive, or getting an online dog training program, which will teach you how to modify any dog's behavior.
I have a blog in which I share some dog training techniques, and has a list of very helpful programs. You can check it at:
