For school: the FAFSA
How does a single parent, un-employed and almost homeless, find help/grants- that are FREE to apply for???
I'm assuming this is in the U.S.
Umm... free market capitalism doesn't really work like that bro. Sorry to say, but this kind of thing is going to be VERY difficult to find and very competitive as a lot of people don't like working and will snatch these things up. I would recommend working as hard as possible to get out of debt (if necessary... if not, even better) and buy some realestate, get some solid investments going and work your way out of this situation.
